Improve your intestinal health with food
Today it is very common to have disturbances in the intestinal tract. Taking care of the intestines is essential, as it is responsible for absorbing all nutrients that the body needs to function correctly. In the colon we have intestinal flora, which is bacteria that carry out a beneficial role in our body. If this bacteria is not well fed, it may lead to problems.
So what can we do to care for our intestinal health?
- Have a varied and balanced diet! This involves eating all kinds of foods, grains (rice, pasta, couscous, bread, etc.), meat, fish, vegetables, fruit, dairy products, and fatty foods such as nuts, etc.
- To regulate intestinal transit, you should mainly increase fibre consumption. There are two types of dietary fibre, insoluble fibre which cleans the intestine by taking with it the substances that have been left halfway, and soluble fibre which serves to feed the beneficial intestinal bacteria, thus helping you to have a good balance of the flora
How to increase fibre consumption?
Very easy! Fibre is found in vegetable foods, especially in foods such as fruit, vegetables, legumes and unrefined grains (whole grains).
A daily consumption of 25-30g of fibre is recommended. To obtain this, consume 5 pieces of fruit and vegetables each day; for example, 3 pieces of fruit throughout the day (one in the morning, one as a dessert and one as a snack) and a vegetable dish for lunch and dinner. Increase consumption of legumes to 3-4 times per week and select whole grain cereals instead of refined grains.
Can I do anything more? You can always do more!
We recommend that you include yogurt in your daily life, as it contains probiotics, which are beneficial bacteria. This will strengthen the balance of intestinal flora. You can add flax seeds, as they are rich in fibre and will add to the total daily intake.
And apart from eating healthily?
- Exercise! Exercise stimulates the movement of our intestines, thus favouring intestinal transit. Carry out physical activity every day, such as going to the gym, playing a game of padel tennis, or simply walking for 30 minutes. Leave the car at home and go to work, go shopping, or run errands on foot.
- Don’t forget to hydrate! Drink between 1.5 and 2 litres of fluid every day. You can do so by drinking 6 to 8 glasses of water, infusions, or soups. Hydration is very important for the proper function of our body and also helps our intestinal health.
